SEPTEMBER OF 2015 WILL BE A MONTH TO REMEMBER AS DETROIT’S HISTORIC EASTERN MARKET DISTRICT WILL BE THE EPICENTER OF DETROIT’S BURGEONING PUBLIC ART MOVEMENT. THE INAUGURAL MURALS IN THE MARKET FESTIVAL WILL KICK OFF ON SEPTEMBER 17TH, AS THESE ARTISTS WILL EXTEND THE MARKET’S VIBRANT HISTORY OF PUBLIC MURALS BY ADDING NEW LARGE SCALE WORK THAT WILL EMBODY THE SPIRIT OF DETROIT AND THE MARKET’S RICH HERITAGE.
Public art has long been an integral part of the Eastern Market district and experience. The Murals In The Market festival will expand on 40+ years of large scale public murals by inviting world class international artists to join with local artists to add exciting new works throughout the market.
With a diverse group of artists from around the world Murals In The Market will enhance the market experience and help continue the transformation of the market district into a must-see destination.
Over the past 4 years 1xRUN and the company's fine art gallery Inner State, have curated and produced over 30 murals in Eastern Market alone, with more than 100 murals throughout the City of Detroit, including the 2011 city-wide Detroit Beautification Project. With the creation of these murals, each area has seen a significant visual impact on the surrounding neighborhood as well as increased traffic, additional economic development and increased safety.
My advertising company, Brooklyn Outdoor, is thrilled to be working with 1xRUN, Inner State Gallery, Eastern Market Corporation, and such talented artists to plan an event that will bring together 20 + local and 20 + international artists to paint large scale murals throughout the district. Murals In The Market will host cultural tours of Detroit, live mural painting, live music events and art lectures inside the Eastern Market district.
Since it began in the 1800s, Eastern Market has gradually become a cornerstone community that nourishes its residents by providing fresh and nutritious food throughout Southeastern Michigan. In more recent years, Eastern Market Corporation has built an infrastructure around the market to support our unwavering mission to enrich the community—nutritionally, culturally and economically.
EASTERN MARKET IS TREASURED BECAUSE OF ITS ECONOMIC VITALITY & UNSCRIPTED INTERACTION OF PEOPLE FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE. OVER 500 DISTINCT VENDORS STRIVE TO THRIVE AT THIS 124 YEAR-OLD MARKET.
While the market’s enduring sense of place has been nurtured without art at the center of its existence, we believe art is critical as we look to the future to develop a wider range of market district experiences, to make the area more compelling on days when the public market is not operating, to provide a wider range of spaces within the market district, to improve food access, and to help businesses grow. Art/artists can help develop these new spaces, create more compelling connections, and help all stakeholders understand the importance of the market’s authenticity without compromising it: what time has joined together let no one tear asunder.
Eastern Market Corporation has the unique capacity to engage a number of stakeholder groups: property and business owners, local and national artists, design professionals, residents and customers. Detroit has historically been a place where art connected people across socioeconomic and racial divides and allowed for dialogue. Such connection is needed right now and focus of the dialogue should be as much on the value of a place as on creating economic opportunities for farmers, artists, and Detroit residents. Eastern Market is perceived as a truly exceptional place and we want to explore how to integrate art with food to develop placemaking strategies.
You have an opportunity to be a part of the first Murals in the Market by sponsoring a small, medium, or large mural that you can show off to your friends, colleagues, and family during the festival and beyond. By donating to the festival you will receive a mention in the event brochure/website, a plaque placed next to the mural you are sponsoring with your name, organization, or business, a VIP cocktail reception with the artists, a signed print of your mural, an event poster, and of course the bragging rights that you have your very own mural in the city.
