Have you noticed the sleeping bag coats some of Detroit’s homeless people wear? If you haven’t keep an eye out for them!

Empowerment Plan founder, Veronika Scott, came up with the totally ingenious design for a long, down coat that can be zipped into a sleeping bag. The project quickly grew from giving homeless people a snug spot to sleep, into a business model that provides homeless women with a stable job opportunity.

Veronika says, “The goal is to help them get to the point of stability they want in their lives.” More than 30 formerly homeless women work as seamstresses for the Empowerment Plan. Veronika hopes to launch a retail version of the coat, in turn creating hundreds of job opportunities for homeless women.
