ABOUT THE WHITNEY-A Detroit Landmark

The Whitney mansion is world famous for upscale dining in Detroit.  Completed in 1894, the Motor City landmark retains the exquisite charm of Detroit’s early upper echelon as a venue for all to enjoy.  The Whitney now provides several unique features within the historical property: the fine dining restaurant, dessert room and pastry shop, The Ghostbar and Gardens.  Each has it’s own unique appeal that guests come specifically to enjoy and sometimes find themselves wandering, spending hours frolicking in the enchantments of the estate.

HISTORY OF HIGH TEA

High Tea at The Whitney transforms you to a time when mid-day was meant for relaxing.  Put on a beautiful hat, leave your cares behind and enjoy The Whitney lifestyle over tea, scones, soup and salad duet, finger sandwiches and pastries.

A Tradition Begins Afternoon Tea is a tradition that began in 1840 by the Seventh Duchess of Bedford. Due to a long period between the meals, the Duchess experienced a sinking feeling that afflicted her between 3 and 4 o’clock. One afternoon she requested a tray of tea, bread, butter, and cake to be brought to her room. Gradually, she became accustomed to this habit and invited her friends to partake in her daily ritual. Within a short period of time, this affair, known as Afternoon Tea, became an elaborate social event. During this time, the Earl of Sandwich invented the sandwich, enhancing the overall experience of Afternoon Tea. Afternoon Tea remains to this day a graceful affair to enjoy in the company of good friends and family.
