Last night the gloves came off (or should we say shakers?) at Detroit City Distillery’s Second Annual Ginsmith Competition. Detroit’s most talented behind the bar threw down their carefully curated cocktails in hopes of being named the 2016 Ginsmith of the year.

As the winner of last year’s competition, Chas Williams partnered with Detroit City Distillery to create the Shopkeeper’s Gin – the same gin this year’s contestants were asked to work with.

$30 for the public to enjoy all the cocktails alongside the judges - quite the deal!

Taking my journalistic duties very seriously, I of course tested all of the drinks.

If you have ever been to DCD, you know they like to turn the music up and the lights down.

Needless to say this is not my best “shot on an iPhone 6 moment”- but trust me the place was packed!

Time for the public vote! Like I said, I did my best to be a well informed voter…..

In the end I fell for the pink drink and cast my ballot for James Downs’ delicious, The Eye of the Orris.

Judges Marlowe Johnson, Kate Williams, Chas Williams, and partial owner Michael Forsyth deliberated as contestants presented their cocktails.

...AND THE WINNER IS

Roger Fruin of The Oakland!

We can’t wait to taste Fruin’s gin at the 3rd Annual Gin Competition next year!
