This morning, Detroit's most fabulous #girlboss candice simons, founder and owner of J’adore Detroit and Brooklyn Outdoor, discussed new spots opening this year in Detroit live on ABC 7 WXYZ Detroit - TV20.
Q: Can you tell us a bit more about j'adore Detroit? What's the origin? How did you start writing about events and "hot spots" in Detroit?
A: “J’adore Detroit truly started as a passion project After moving back to Detroit from Chicago TO START MY ADVERTISING COMPANY, BROOKLYN OUTDOOR. People questioned why I moved to Detroit to start an advertising agency instead of New York or Chicago. My answer was always that I wanted to bring my long-time experience in the ad industry to detroit and be closer to friends and family. I ended up finding everything in a place that I and those around me thought I would find nothing. After about a year of coming downtown by myself to explore, I fell head over heels in love. J’adore Detroit is a way for me to draw attention to all the exciting things going on in Detroit. On J’adore Detroit, we talk about arts, entertainment, culture, nightlife, fashion, food, business development, and real estate. We are different from the other resources on the city because we have so many various perspectives with all that we do in the event planning and business world.”
Q: What are your picks for restaurants that people should be visiting in Detroit in 2017?
A: “Keep an eye out for Lady of the House slated to open in Corktown this summer. the restaurant is expected to open by summer in the former St Cece's space. Chef Kate Williams is a close friend of mine and I will be releasing some insider tidbits as the opening nears - so stay tuned! A low key town favorite, Alley Taco (currently housed inside Marcus Market), is opening a flagship on Willis Street in the next few months! I happen to be one of the partners in this opening and there is a huge need for it in Midtown. We will serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner AND it’s going to be open until 3AM. Go to Marcus Market and try it out now (especially the 5 for 5 deal - 5 tacos for 5 bucks!). I will of course keep you updated as the progress continues for an opening date and new menu offerings."
Q: What are the best bars in Detroit?
A: "There are so many great bars right now that are amazing! Standby is one of my favorites. It is in the Belt it’s right in the center of downtown. Insider tip: order a Snake in the Grass, it’s my favorite drink!) Bad Luck Bar just opened and is a new cocktail bar that is fresh to the mix. Also, Eastern Market Brewing Company is opening soon in the market - we are meeting with our new neighbors this week to see how we can help them settle in and of course try the beer!"
Q: FOR THOSE THAT DON'T MAKE THE TRIP DOWNTOWN OFTEN, WHY SHOULD PEOPLE MAKE IT A PRIORITY TO VISIT DETROIT MORE IN 2017?
A: "Detroit is quickly becoming a go-to destination throughout michigan and the country. With the new Little Caesar's Arena will be opening this year and a rapidly developing at the center of the focus, there will be massive development beginning to sprawl outwards from District Detroit. The QLINE will soon be operating and connecting passengers to downtown, midtown, and new center also allowing for sightseeing along the way. People that don't make the trip downtown are missing out on the chance to see and take part in Detroit's rebirth. Each year in the past two years is like coming to a new city. I highly suggest that Detroit become one of your first thoughts when the weekend is near!"
Q: SOME OF YOUR "HOT SPOT" PICKS WERE RECENTLY FEATURED ON STAY.COM, CAN YOU SHARE A FEW FROM YOUR LIST THAT REALLY STAND OUT TO YOU AND TELL US WHY?
A: "CAFÉ D’MONGO’S SPEAKEASY is an uber-swanky 1930’s themed bar and restaurant that is a must see. Dance to live music into the wee hours of the morning. Make the night extra fun and dress the part by wearing your fave vintage ensemble! If you happen to run across Larry (you’ll know him if you see him) , tell him J’adore Detroit sent you and you’re in for a treat. Larry is one of the most charismatic and biggest supporters of Detroit I know and the stories he can tell you… You will never be sorry when you spend your night at D’Mongos. To keep up with Larry, you will need coffee.
EASTERN MARKET: Get an early start on the day and head to Eastern Market on Saturday morning (or any day for that matter!!). The birds are chirping, the sun is out, the energy is high, and there is music in the air. The market has an invigorating energy (similar to meatpacking district and certain areas of Brooklyn in New York). Join local Detroiters as they forage for their weekly groceries, plants, and specialty food products all made in – you guessed it – Detroit!"
Q: WHAT MAKES DETROIT SPECIAL TO YOU PERSONALLY?
A: "i love the culture detroit has to offer. There is this cross between grit and polish - which really calls to me as that is the mentality I built my company on. It is shiny in some places and gritty a block down - it has heart, soul, and keeps me on my toes. I find it so beautiful and honest with such a strong community willing to stand by my side. You can't get by without your friends and that is why Detroit is such a special place. We will rise together or not at all."
Q: J'ADORE DETROIT IS HEADQUARTERED IN EASTERN MARKET. WHAT MADE YOU BUILD YOUR BUSINESS HERE AND WHAT DO YOU THINK IS DRIVING DETROIT'S RECENT EMERGENCE AS A DESTINATION ON NATIONAL LISTS?
A: "When I moved back from Chicago, I was shocked and amazed by everything happening in Detroit. The minute we stepped into the loft we now occupy in Eastern market, we knew we were home. From there, everything seemed to fall into place quite naturally. Our neighbors have become family and huge supporters. The vibrancy to me building my businesses in Detroit meant the opportunity to support and be supported by a growing community of Entrepreneurs. This idea of the Phoenix Rising: as the story goes, the Phoenix, a mythical bird that lives up to 100 years, nears the end of life and settles into a nest that burns from twigs to ashes. From those ashes, the Phoenix rises - renewed and reborn. People want to see the underdog succeed, but what people are starting to see if Detroit's heart and it's charming anyone who will take the time to visit and hear our story."
There is a lot to look forward to in 2017.
Stay tuned, J’adore Detroit will keep you in the know!
