It’s finally safe to it out loud, folks -– Spring has arrived!

Getting outside, taking in that fresh air and the natural surroundings has never felt so good, right?! How appropriate that Earth Day, a holiday meant to raise awareness of environmental issues and celebrate our beautiful planet, is held during these first sweet moments of Spring.

In an effort to celebrate this holiday and introduce the importance of being mindful of our environment in general, I’ve been looking for ways to expose B to the workings of the planet and earth-friendly habits.  We started our month by checking out the Michigan Science Center, located right across the way from one of our favorite spots, the DIA, on John R St. in Detroit.

The museum is visually captivating and stimulating (for any age!) with two spacious levels showcasing over 200 hands-on exhibits and activities. The main floor includes displays and interactive features about Health and Wellness, Machines, Roadways, and Energy. B loved putting on his engineer’s hat as he walked the Mini Mac Bridge and manipulated simple machines in the Factory Exhibit.

In addition to putting on live shows and demonstrations, the lower level houses many exhibits that are as engaging as much as they are enriching.  A favorite of ours is the Space Exhibit where you can view a Space Shuttle launch, take a tour of the galaxy, and learn about the history of space travel.

Exploration and discovery is definitely the name of the game at the Michigan Science Center. In addition to viewing the exhibits, B had the chance to build and innovate in the Kidstruction Zone and Spark Lab. The museum also has a Kids Town for younger children, Planetarium, and an IMAX theatre, which currently features the films Born to Be Wild and Dream Big

Although this day trip was spent indoors, the museum provided an opportunity to explore our “Earth” and learn about Science-related concepts. Definitely a place to inspire curious minds and get in touch with our special planet!

Looking to celebrate Earth Day with your family? Meet zookeepers, make earth-friendly crafts, and learn about our environment with games and stories. Hope to see you at one of these green-themed events on April 22, 2017!
