I celebrated national rum day the right way at The Conserva in Ferndale sipping AfroHead rum.

It was my first time at the restaurant and will definitely not be my last. It was the most fabulous experience from start to finish.

The cocktails were mixed by Joe Schubert aka “Guy in the Tie,” Detroit’s very own most interesting man. (J’adore Exclusive coming soon). Joe put together a concoction similar to a hurricane spruced up with a few secret ingredients and AfroHEAD rum. I’m not much of a rum drinker but Afrohead is an exception, it’s delightful. If you haven’t tried it, you must.

Joe crowned The Conserva “The fight club of cool places” and he couldn’t be more spot on. The walls are decorated in murals painted by Steve Baldridge. There’s a stellar patio space, the restaurant is a block or so behind Como’s just far enough away from the chaos of Woodward’s traffic. I was extremely impressed with their private dining room, plans are already in the making to host a dinner party with the squad.

The food was phenomenal. I ordered the oysters and chicken wings. Both were crave worthy. The oysters were topped with corn and roasted red peppers. The chicken was seasoned to perfection and topped with a peanut sprinkling.

The Conserva gets two thumbs up and a gold star. The food was delicious, it’s one of a select few places that serves afrohead, the ambience is chic and trendy, and the staff is charismatic and a joy to be around.

I’m usually not one to go out in Ferndale but it was a blast and I will definitely make a point to go there more frequently. After hanging out at The Conserva for way too long (literally 3 hours) I went to Woodward Avenue Brewers and Imperial for drinks. Both were a great time, I was shocked how many people were out on a Wednesday.

I want to publicly apologize for misjudging Ferndale.
