A different take on athletic gear shopping has landed in Detroit in the former space of Kit + Ace and we couldn't be happier to welcome Lululemon downtown. The most unique aspect of the Downtown Detroit Local is utilizing the space as a hub for impact, connection and action. One of five stores like this in the country, Lululemon will work with the Downtown Boxing Gym to invest $20,000 to create a youth program based around yoga and meditation. Boxing + Yoga for our youth in Detroit, what could be better?
On top of the initial $20,000 donation made by Lululemon, 50% of all profits up to $200,000 will go to the Downtown Boxing Gym over the initial partnership of 2 years. This amount could make for an extensive youth yoga program that withstands the test of time and has a considerable impact on the community.
The Downtown Boxing Gym was the obvious partner for the Downtown Detroit Local because of the longstanding relationship the non-profit has with Detroit. The gym currently serves more than 130 students between the ages of 7 and 18, with a growing waiting list. More than 75% of the enrolled students live within a 3-mile radius of the gym and are residents of the nearby public housing units.
Now let's talk about the space! It's gorgeous and doubles as a retail space and community engagement endeavor equipped with a board room for meetings, hanging out and classes. The goal here is to welcome people from the community to work in the space in really capacity. The light and bright feel of the space makes it perfect for that! You'll be in good company too as the space boasts local designers such as: Shinola, Playground Detroit, Flora Detroit, Ellen Rutt & Lisa Spindler.
We love the fact that Lululemon’s Downtown Detroit Local is one of five Lululemon locals across the US + Canada that are functioning as Here to Be hubs in Houston, Detroit, Toronto, Montreal and Philadelphia.
We are so excited for Lululemon to be in the D and look forward to getting involved in their yoga and volunteer programs.
