Being the queen of playlist-making and an avid live music connoisseur, there is no better time to see concerts in the D than in the summer. Along with avoiding Michigan snow (please stay away forever, thanks), the summertime always proves itself to bring the best acts to the Motor City, and this year proves to be no different. Below is my personal go-to guide on the hottest concerts in the Detroit area this summer, and just why you can’t miss them.
Artist: Harry Styles and Kacey Musgraves
Venue: Little Caesars Area (Detroit, MI)
Whether you’re a former (or current) 1D fangirl like myself or get down to Musgraves’s country-pop genius masterpiece, Golden Hour, this surprising duo this is the perfect concert to kick off the summer.
Artist: Weezer, Pixies, and The Wombats
Venue: DTE Energy Music Theatre (Clarkston, MI)
To all of my alt-emo lovers out there, the mashup of these three bands will make this concert easily one of your favorites. With a rumored Black Album by Weezer coming out on Friday, the chance to see them perform new music is fairly high.
Artist: The Beach Boys
Venue: Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre at Freedom Hill (Sterling Heights, MI)
I am a firm believer in the phrase “an oldie but a goodie.” Even though The Beach Boys are no longer in their 1960s prime, their songs still prove themselves to be endless summer classics. Also, you’ll feel like you’re by the ocean in Sterling Heights, and you can’t complain about that.
Festival: MO POP
Venue: West Riverfront Park (Detroit, MI)
Date: 7/28 and 7/29
How could I not include Michigan’s best festival on this list? Bigger and better than ever, artists like The National, Bon Iver, Rex Orange County, and Billie Eilish are taking stage. Catch me trying to plan my schedule out perfectly so I can see everyone performing— with a lineup like that, it’s the only thing you can do.
Artist: Arctic Monkeys
Venue: Masonic Temple (Detroit, MI)
After a five-year hiatus, your favorite Sheffield, UK natives are back in the USA to promote their new album, Tranquility Base Hotel. As a fan of theirs since my sophomore year of high school, I’m banking on some old hits as well (AKA the entirety of the album Suck It and See)
Artist: Beyoncé and Jay-Z
Venue: Ford Field (Detroit, MI)
TBH, not sure if this concert is actually going to be real. The second part of the On the Run tour installation, I can imagine the entirety of Lemonade and 4:44 will be performed, along with some old hits like “Single Ladies” and “Empire State of Mind.” Once again, will this finally be the proof that Beyonce is an actual human and not an ethereal being?
Artist: Taylor Swift
Venue: Ford Field (Detroit, MI)
The Queen of Cats is back in the D to promote her 2017 album Reputation. After going to both her Red and 1989 tours, I can only imagine the light shows and special guests that Miss Swift will feast the eyes (and ears) with.
While I wish I could attend all of these shows, I unfortunately can't (college student life). I need you, J'adorers, to take on this challenge with me to see all of these! However, you can definitely find me at the Arctic Monkeys show, along with Beyoncé and Jay-Z. I apologize now for my horrendous dance moves, but can you blame a girl?
