WE'RE SURE YOU'VE HEARD BY NOW THERE'S A NEW DIVE IN TOWN. A "DIVE TIKI" TO BE EXACT. FOUNDER OF DETROIT OPTIMIST SOCIETY, DAVE KWAITKOWSKI EXPANDS HIS EMPIRE TO SOUTHWEST DETROIT WITH THE OPENING OF MUTINY, OFF VERNOR HIGHWAY. WE POPPED BY FOR THE SOFT OPENING - AND WERE KIND OF OBSESSED. SO HERE'S 5 REASONS WHY YOU NEED TO RUN NOT WALK TO THIS LITTLE SLICE OF SOUTHWEST DETROIT PARADISE.

1. BYOF(ood)

Yep, rock out with a tiki drink while chowing down on a $6 pizza from PizzaPlex that's just a block down the street. Taqueria El Rey is across the way with $1.50 tacos. Need your Coney fix? Verner Coney Island or Duley's is right around the corner. But really you're in the mood for Chinese food, good thing China House is there where a full meal will run you about 7 bucks!

2. SOUTHWEST ROCKS

Detroit has developed from the inside out - literally from Campus Martius - so we're pumped major operators are starting to show Southwest the love it deserves. The vibes off Verner Highway in Mexicantown can't be replicated anywhere else in the city. There's an untapped feeling that's hard to come by in the new Detroit.

3. THE DRINKS ARE CHEAP

Like really cheap considering the amount of booze in these tiki cocktails. Drinks range from $7-$24. We know what you're thinking, $24 for a cocktail, you're insane. Considering the $24 Scorpion Bowl indulges 2+ people and is boozy AF, we think it's a pretty damn good deal. In the restaurant industry? Yeah - you're getting an additional 30% off on Sundays.

4. THERE'S FREE PARKING AND PLENTY OF IT

The meters haven't quite infiltrated yet. Park for free and as long as you want or better yet take the $9 Uber from city center - Like we said, the drinks are strong.

5.  THE SPOT IS CHILL

It's a dive tiki and we couldn't love that term anymore - perfect for the neighborhood & space. It wouldn't be a tiki bar if it wasn't outfitted with your typical tiki decor, high back chairs, leis everywhere and a palmed bar top. It's authentic, feels like it's been there for years - and hope it's there for many to come.

Mutiny Bar is open Wednesday, Thursday & Sunday from 5pm - Midnight and Friday & Saturday until 2 am. Plenty of time to go get your tiki on!

xoxo,
