EVERY MARCH AROUND THE VERNAL EQUINOX, PEOPLE OF DETROIT GATHER FOR A PARADE, “NAIN ROUGE” THROUGH MIDTOWN WEARING GRAND COSTUMES OR MAKING FABULOUS FLOATS, MARCHING IN THE STREETS TO TRICK THE NAIN WITH THIS 300 YEAR OLD NEMESIS (THE DEMON ‘NAIN ROUGE’).

The idea of wearing costumes in the parade is to conceal their identity from the Nain, who is known to gain revenge, for Detroit rising again. Legend has it that in 1701, the city’s founder, Antoine de La Mothe Cadillac dreamed of the Nain (a red fiery-eyed devil). She panicked and sought out a fortune teller, who told him that the dream was a warning and the creature could bring harm and destruction to the new city. SOOOO, Detroiters who love their city set the Nain in line every year, and also brings support from local businesses as well.
