Tucked in an urban triangle island created by Grand River and Cass, Republic Tavern has made an impressive name for itself in the Detroit restaurant scene. Upon entering the restaurant, there is a unifying cool and calm air about the space. Deep blue walls and upholstery reflect off of square marble dining tables. The opulent ambience is mitigated with rustic woods and a funky collection of art that varies from abstract to contemporary realism.
Similar to the aesthetic of the ambiance, the rotating menu at Republic Tavern is a delicate balance of natural, locally sourced flavors and keen eye for art and design. My friends and I recently dined-in at Republic Tavern and loved the experience. Below are some of the highlights from our dinner date.
One of my top picks at Republic Tavern for a friend date/small gathering is the Ploughman’s Plate. While the offering depends on the season, ours featured a selection of hand picked meats and cheeses, candied nuts, pickled veggies, sprouts, tomatoes, and house breads. The Ploughman’s Plate can feed around four people, if you are looking for an app to pair with wine or a mixed drink.
The Pan Seared Bay Scallops and Seasonal Curry stand out as my favorite entree dishes. The creativity and artistry delivered by the chef and staff shines through on both. The scallops were seared with an Anson blue cornmeal dredge, placed on summer corn coulis, and topped with fresh summer corn and seasonal flowers. The corn coulis gave the dish a creamy and sweet flavor that complimented the chewy, succulent scallops beautifully.
As a plant-based option, the Seasonal Curry is colorful, flavorful, and most importantly, hearty. This dish consists of rotating vegetables, farro, smoked chickpea, and cashews. Well spiced and a nice vegetable-to-protein balance with the farro and chickpea. The cashews add a delightful sweet crunch and are always welcomed on a curry dish.
For dessert, opt for the Strawberry Shortcake, which makes a great dish to split with a significant other. The Strawberry Shortcake is paired with a lemon verbena ice cream and topped with lemon curd and picked strawberries. The tart lemon curd and sweet strawberry provide a wonderful contrast and greatly enhance the flavors. It is the perfect indulgence and wonderfully executed.
For your next dinner date, check out the Republic Tavern. Their rotating menu is thoughtfully crafted and ever changing- a reason to keep coming back to try new flavors and an excuse to hang out with friends, family, or significant other. As Republic Tavern puts it, “We’re just friends cooking for friends.”
