SOMETIMES, YOU HAVE TO WANDER INTO THE UNKNOWN TO FIND THE SPECIAL SURPRISES IN LIFE. 5IVE STEAKHOUSE AT THE INN AT ST. JOHNS IN PLYMOUTH, MICHIGAN WAS ONE OF THEM. HERE’S A LITTLE INSIDE SCOOP ABOUT MY JOURNEY TO THIS GEM:
Built in 2006, this upscale building (The Inn at St. John’s Hotel, home of 5ive Steakhouse updated in 2016) was made as an addition to the St. John’s Provincial Seminary, where in 1955 a remarkable chapel was dedicated. Having closed in 1988, the stunning chapel reopened again in 1998 and underwent redevelopment to add venues for receptions, conferences, and still has masses take place on Sunday evenings. This place is a perfect one-stop-shop for weddings as well, with a hotel on premise, golf course, and the most beautiful halls. Even the meeting facilities are ideal, having great views of the gorgeous gardens kept up by an onsite horticulturist.
We also got a tour of their impressive full facility, which is this an amazing place to grab brunch or dinner, and learned just how the banquet kitchen is able to serve up to 800 people at a time with piping hot food that’s ready for their audience! My friends and I went here for a wedding show, and happily decided to dine at the steakhouse for brunch afterwards, where we were more than pleasantly surprised by the experience we had and all of the DELICIOUS food we shamelessly consumed.
HERE WERE MY FAV DISHES:
The B.E.L.T. (bacon, egg, lettuce, tomato) Griddled house made brioche, maple sumac cured crisp pork belly, sunny-up quail egg, watercress, aioli, oven roasted Campari tomato, nasturtium petals
Holy. Wow. This little powerhouse dish was the most delicious surprise I have ever gotten in my life. The creamy, rich quail egg went perfectly with the oven roasted Campari (an Italian liqueur) tomato, which was elevated by the salty/sweet pork belly and the buttery crunchy brioche. I could have had five of these but I decided to pace myself for other items on the menu, which was hard to resist!
SOHO BAGEL smoked turkey, bacon, watercress, avocado, smoked tomato bacon jam, baby swiss, griddled bagel, home fries
An amazing spin on a classic turkey sandwich, but everyone knows that bagels make everything better. Between the smoked tomato bacon jam and the hot griddled bagel holding these delicious ingredients together, this was magical. That is all.
CHICKEN & WAFFLES Guerney’s buttermilk-marinated fried chicken, candied pecan-bacon waffles, Sriracha maple glaze
I never met a waffle I didn’t like, but these blew the rest out of the water. Instead of having one big waffle, the smaller waffles created more surface area for crunch and syrup to go along with the tangy buttermilk chicken. On top of it, the Sriracha maple glaze made it for me (because Sriracha, duh). Honestly, this meal put a smile on my face, a food baby in my belly and I was living on cloud nine for the rest of the day.
So, if you ever need a breather from the city and decide to get out to the burbs, this is where you need to go. With amazing staff and an extremely talented chef, 5ive Steakhouse was more than we could have asked for. Sometimes taking a little adventure 20 minutes away could be the best thing you do all week, or ever, for that matter!
