Slow Roll Opener: RED ROLL Eastern Market 4/25

In Case you missed it, here it is again for all the information you need about the

THIS Monday 4/25 kicking off the season!

Slow Roll is a group bicycle ride that meets every Monday night in Detroit and has expanded into a national network of community rides. Each week we meet at different venues and take a unique route throughout the city, including all the major and minor neighborhoods that we are so proud of.

Slow Roll is for everyone; all ages, all skill levels and every type of bike is welcome. Our slow pace keeps the group safe and gives riders a unique perspective of our great city and its neighborhoods.

Now in the a 6th Season, Slow Roll is operated by Detroit Bike City, Inc., a non-profit corporation. We have worked hard to continue with the spirit of Slow Roll and to create a membership program that will help to ensure the ride and its future in Detroit and beyond. With the great partnership that has developed with the City of Detroit and the Detroit Police Department, Season six is set to be a great one. Some new venues, new routes, old favorites, and a police escort to keep us safe and rolling!

Slow Roll is Michigan's largest weekly bike ride, and now with 3000+ riders each week and Slow Rolls popping up across the country and around the globe, we are becoming the largest weekly bike ride in the WORLD. An amazing and diverse group joins us from all over Southeast Michigan and beyond, creating what we consider one of the greatest gatherings of all time.

The positive energy and community driven atmosphere is what keeps people coming back and sharing the Slow Roll experience with their friends and family!

This season Slow Roll founder Jason Hall and Brooklyn Outdoor + J'Adore Detroit's founder, Candice Simons, both sit proudly on the American Heart Association's Executive Leadership Team for the 2016 Heart Ball.  They have infused youth and energy into the efforts for the 2016 Heart Ball year and are spearheading the Red Roll, which kicks off the first Slow Roll of the year to raise money with the community for the Association.  Heart disease effects everyone and does not discriminate.  We encourage everyone to join Slow Roll this season and get moving + get heart healthy! Donations from Red Roll will benefit cardiovascular research and educational programs.

RESPECT for the community and SAFTEY are paramount. If we cannot be respectful and safe, we can't Slow Roll, simple as that. These basic rules will accomplish our goals and maintain a positive impression of not only Slow Roll, but of cycling as a whole. Make sure you're following the Code of Conduct at all times and helping to inform new riders. You'll have the full support of the SQUAD behind you, but it's up to each of us to be responsible for ourselves and each other.

The SQUAD is what makes Slow Roll work, they are the volunteers in yellow shirts that keep you safe and on the road. They make and test the routes, fix your flats, lead the ride, direct traffic and keep everyone safe. LISTEN to the SQUAD at all times; do as they say and encourage other riders to do the same. While we appreciate riders taking on the responsibility of promoting our Code of Conduct, we ask that you allow SQUAD to handle all traffic situations. Do not attempt to cork or block traffic, our SQUAD is trained to know when to stop the ride and when to stop vehicle traffic for the ride. Their efforts are coordinated over miles of riders, so always follow directions from any SQUAD member and THANK them for their service!

Come Prepared // Make sure your bike is in good working order BEFORE coming to the meeting location. Bring plenty of water, a spare tube for flats, your helmet and a light kit. The SQUAD is there if you need them, but you should come as prepared as possible.

Stay Right // Always stay on the right side of the road, using no more than two lanes, and NEVER cross the yellow line into oncoming traffic, even if there are no cars. Let's show the community that we can share the roads safely and respectfully.

Communicate // Use hand and verbal signals to communicate with other riders. Shout out turns, stops, passing, debris or obstructions, and anything else that will keep the group safe.

Stay Alert & Be Aware // It's important to pay attention to what's going on around you. You're surrounded by thousands of bikers and hundreds of motorists at any given time, over a changing terrain. Make sure you're conscious of everyone and everything around you to keep yourself and other safe.

Share the Road //  If we want motorists to respect us, we must lead by example by respecting them as well.  Before and after the ride, be sure to keep the road clear. Always leave a lane open while riding and when you hear "car back" be sure to move as far to the right as possible to allow traffic to pass safely. When coming to a stop, do not ride past those stopping in front of you – stay in line.

Stick Together // If you see a gap forming, ride a little faster to keep the group together. Wide gaps in the ride can leave room for cars to break the pack, a potentially dangerous situation.

Roll Slow // We call it Slow Roll for a reason! Stay behind the leader at all times. Do not weave in and out of other riders or speed past each other. If you want to ride fast, join SQUAD and try to keep up.

Don't Be Sweet // Please don't do tricks in the crowd, pop wheelies, jump curbs or try to show off. We don't care how good you are, in a large group accidents can and will happen. BMX riders are more than welcome, but should stay on the sidewalks and away from the crowd while doing tricks.

You can now become an official card carrying member of one of the largest bike groups in the country.  In 2016 all riders must register for an annual membership with Slow Roll that offers discounts, special offers, and the ability to support the ride and keep us all rolling safely! This all started with some friends riding their bikes together and we still think of it that way. But when thousands of friends get together on the streets, some things need to happen.

Long ago we outgrew our ability to fly under the radar. So we have been working with city officials behind the scenes, and our sheer numbers now mean we have to do more to keep everyone safe, neighbors happy, and to better coordinate with the community. That means we’re taking big steps – and incurring big costs – to obtain permits, police support for traffic control, event insurance and more. All of that adds up fast. A low cost annual membership will help pay for that and keep Slow Roll rolling. We couldn’t be happier with how the City of Detroit is embracing us and working with us to make Slow Roll happen. City government wants us exploring the city on our bikes just as much as we want to roll through these streets. It’s a win-win for all of us.

A basic membership is only $10 per season. That’s right – up to 30 rides for only ten bucks. A premium membership costs a little more and comes with some major bonuses.

No one will ever be turned away if they can not pay. If you would like a free membership,  just fill out the forms below or ask us at the membership table at any Slow Roll – you can have a free membership with no questions asked. We trust our community not to abuse this offer, and we want to ride with everyone who wants to join us.

You can show extra support for Slow Roll by becoming a Slow Roll Patron and getting a $50 Premium Membership. You’ll receive a special t-shirt available only to Patrons as well as other special discounts and offers. Think free entry to select events, early invites, prizes, and 20% off merchandise all season. Plus more surprises along the way, including offers from partnering shops like Downtown Ferndale Bike Shop.

By buying a premium membership you’re helping to fund our operating costs – including our ability to offer free membership to Slow Rollers who need a little help.

In 2014 we created Detroit Bike City, Inc. – a Michigan non-profit corporation which owns and operates Slow Roll. It is in the process of obtaining a 501(c)(3) designation from the IRS. Detroit Bike City, Inc. receives membership fees and other revenues to pay the growing expenses of operating Slow Roll.

Nothing good lasts long without some lawyers showing up. As part of you membership you’ll be required to sign a waiver and release. Sigh. We’ll have a mobile phone check in system at events because we need to count how many riders show up. Sigh. We’ll keep it simple and easy, because this is still friends on bikes.

**All information collected is for the sole use of the Slow Roll Membership Programs and will never be shared or sold and will remain confidential within our organization. **
