Beckett's Day at the DIA

Hello j'adore Detroit readers! We are excited about our first post with beckett on board.  what better than to highlight one of our favorite spots?! the dia!

It’s no secret the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) is one of our city’s gems. The “temple of art”  offers over 100 galleries, all showcasing beauty, culture and history. BUT, have you considered the DIA for a perfect little day trip with your family?! I took my lil’ guy, Beckett, and our experience was one that will keep us coming back for more.

The DIA’s expansive courts and galleries allowed B to the lead the way through our day’s adventure -- a role he covets. We were met by unique but equally captivating collections at every turn. Perfect for engaging young, creative minds!

An “Eye Spy” game, stationed in many galleries throughout the museum, kept my lil’ busy body engaged and interested. Using descriptive and visual clues we worked together to locate different objects and pieces of art. Other points of interest were the life-sized video in the Afican Gallery (beautufully stimulating song and dance kept B’s attention for at least 15 minutes, I swear) and the Rivera Court, of course.

Before heading home we made sure to (literally!) put our feet up and eat at the super cozy yet chic Kresge Court.  The Court offers a variety of gourmet snacks, sandwiches, STARBUCKS coffee and WINE!! Yes, WINE!! We both very much enjoyed the Turkey Focaccia and B particularly liked the yummy danish. The atrium’s dreamy ambience and delish food made this place hard to leave.

It’s safe to say that B was completely sold on our DIA experience and another visit is definitely in the cards SOON! We are looking forward to seeing galleries through a different lens, exploring the uncharted and having another lunch date (possibly a glass of wine for mama, too)!

QUICK TIPS: Talk about “DO NOT TOUCH” ahead of time. Avoid the Glass Exhibit. Check out DIA.ORG for scheduled kid-friendly workshops and programs. THINK FREE (Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties receive free unlimited general museum admission, YAY)!
