A Detroiter's Guide to Movement 2019

Put your hands up for Detroit! It’s that time of year again for a glorious weekend filled with techno music and dancing on the Detroit riverfront.

Whether you are a longtime techno fan or newbie to the scene – Movement 2019 is the place to get your beat filled fix.

Local favorites, All-time legends, and Ghetto-tech DJs and artists will create the vibrations for a dance party to keep you moving all weekend long.

Between the different stages, pre-parties, after-parties and the rest of the hoopla it’s enough to make your head spin. Fear not, we’re here to give you the LO-down (ya get it) on how to navigate the festival like a pro.

FESTIVAL NEED TO KNOWS:

Saturday, May 25th: 2pm-12am

Sunday, May 26th: 2pm-12am

Monday, May 27th: 2pm-12am

 TICKETS:

Purchase one-day or weekend passes for GA, VIP and Club 313. BUY TICKETS HERE

 STAGES:

There are five stages, each with their own vibe.

Stargate stage: distinctly Detroit with local favorites

The Resident Advisor Stage: it gets darker as you go underground and so does the techno at this stage built around concrete walls

Redbull Presents Stage: get down to ghetto-tech, funk, hip-hop and breakbeats amongst the trees at the only stage not built on concrete.

The Pyramid Stage: after all the dance ensued sweat you’ll be begging for the river’s breeze. Head to this riverfront tech-house stage for some relief.

Movement Stage: this is the holy-grail of all the stages. All the big players and legends will be performing here.

 WHAT TO WEAR:

In Detroit we wear BLACK. Have fun with it, be bizarre. But, the city has a sense of industry and grit about it that is reflected in our style. If you show up looking like a glittery unicorn with furry leg warmers on, you will stick out like a sore-thumb. For reals though, wear something comfortable and breathable

Sneakers & boots. I repeat. Sneakers & Boots. You’ll be walking, dancing, and shimmying your way across Hart Plaza all weekend long. Wear something comfortable and perhaps something you don’t mind getting dirty.

I know all of you club shoe wearing mama’s want to strut your stuff in a pair of platforms, but I’ve seen even the fanciest of walkers break an ankle at the festival. Sandals are also a no-go. If you are cool with having your toes crushed or stepping into a wet pile of who-knows-what, then be my guest. But, I highly advice against it.

Sunglasses: Movement is certainly a marathon not a sprint. But, even the most well-seasoned partiers can’t get away without carrying a little extra baggage under your eyes this weekend. A fresh pair of shades will have you looking incognito and cool AF. Also, there is no waterproof mascara in the WORLD that is going to survive a techno dance party through the Memorial Day humidity. So skip it and use a great pair of sunnies’ to those naked lashes undercover.

Items allowed into the festival: baby strollers, fanny packs, purses, backpacks (no framed) , blankets, sheets, towels, cameras (no detachable lenses) water bottles, plastic or aluminum.

There will be lockers available that you can reserve ahead of time: HERE. There will also be phone charging stations available, but I recommend bringing a rechargeable battery to make sure you can stay in contact with your friends.

PARTIES:

The city is STACKED with parties all weekend long. If you wait too long to make plans your first choice could sell out or you could spend most of your night waiting in line to get in.

With all the options it can be overwhelming. So, I went ahead and selected some of my favorite parties to help you narrow it down!

Friday, May 24th:

Our favorite local party planners throw down again on a party that jumpstarts Movement weekend 2019. Join HAUTE to DEATH and HOUSE of YES at Deluxx Fluxx from 9pm - 2am for a party that will prepare your mind, body and spirit for a weekend of awakening. Visit www.H2Dsocial.club.com to RSVP early for free entry!

Saturday, May 25th:

Our Eastern Market neighbors over at SMPLFD are hosting their annual Feelin’ Real Good daytime BBQ party. Relax, dance, eat and drink your way through the alley behind the store where you can also find a taco & salsa bar. Party is free, all ages welcome, noon-9pm.

Put your party pants on for Egyptian Lover and other a lengthy line up of DJ’s from all across the global underground. TEXTURE and Marble Bar invite you to come out for an exploration of light, space and sound. Doors open at 10pm and go until 7am. Get presale tickets HERE.

 Sunday, May 26th:

Whoo, after a night like that you will definitely need some brunch to resurrect you. Detroit Vinyl Room + DIMI BOWIE are teaming up to bring you an all-day event on the patio of Gold Cash Gold. Some good eats and extended sets from Mike Huckaby and more should get you fueled up for another round of techno in the city.

Now that you’re good to go, head on over to the Belt for the 2nd Annual Do-Over block party presented by Adidas. From tropical-to-techno, expect the unexpected and a banger line up of surprise DJ’s from around the world. Party is free with a RSVP at thedovover.net/detroit2019

Freaks come out at night. Southwest is going to get xxtra psychedelic at Freaklimate brought to you by Freakish Pleasures + Sublimate. Art installations and lighting will transform the space into a mind-bending experience. This party is not for the faint. So, if you like to get weird (as I quite like to do) then the Salon is slap city! Doors open at 10pm, get your brain licked until 7am.

 Monday, May 27th:

Hope you saved some energy for Where Are My Keys? Miami’s premiere club, Electric Pickle is partnering with Detroit’s own Marble Bar to host this boutique party that pops-up in the most choice places. We know this is coming at the tail-end of a weekend of shenanigans. Luckily Ayuverda Hydration will be there to offer magic elixirs via IV drip that will bring you back to life.

For some final relaxation and rejuvenation take a splash in the MGM Casino’s infinity saltwater pool at the Haute to Death Swim Club. Soak in the pool for a purifying experience that will resurrect you after a weekend of sensory exploration. Guests are also invited to make reservations to indulge in the services offered at Immerse Day Spa.
