Easy Ways to Volunteer During the Holidays
AS THE HOLIDAYS, SHOPPING AND GIFTS APPROACH, IT'S NICE TO TAKE A STEP BACK TO HELP THE GREATER COMMUNITY. AFTER ALL, IT IS THE SEASON OF GIVING AND WHAT BETTER WAY TO HONOR THIS TRADITION THAN TO VOLUNTEER AT A DETROIT BASED CHARITY. HERE ARE A FEW OF OUR FAVORITES IN THE CITY:
EMPTY BOWLS DETROIT BENEFITTING CASS COMMUNITY SERVICE
Empty Bowls Detroit (EBD) is looking for volunteers to paint and “throw” bowls for it’s annual fundraiser. EBD holds the yearly fundraiser in Eastern Market Shed #5 during the spring to raise money for Cass Community Social Services. It’s a fun social event with a cause! At the end of the event night, each guest takes home a hand painted bowl, as a reminder that there is always an empty bowl that needs filling. To sign up for a bowl painting workshop click HERE.
All proceeds benefit Cass Community Social Services whose mission is to provide food, housing, health services, and job programs to those in need.
GLEANERS COMMUNITY FOOD BANK
A resource for food and education, Gleaners seeks to end hunger in Southeast Michigan. A simple and easy way to help this amazing organization is to volunteer at their distribution center in Detroit. Grab a group of friends and register HERE to help Gleaners with sorting and packing non perishables and fresh produce. The mission of Focus: Hope is to “...pledge intelligent and practical action to overcome racism, poverty, and injustice. And to build a metropolitan community where all people may live in freedom, harmony, trust and affection.” Focus: Hope has a great need for volunteers including: a graphic designer, data entry, classroom assistant, mock interviewers, helping with food packing, and many more. There are so many ways to get involved with Focus: Hope, and you can check out their full listing HERE.
COTS (Coalition on Temporary Shelter)
COTS mission is to alleviate homelessness in the City of Detroit through services and long term solutions that promote self-sufficiency and quality affordable housing. Two volunteer opportunities at COTS are: (1) to help with their food service program/kitchen staff assistance, and (2) organization of clothes donations. COTS encourages many different groups to volunteer including families, religious affiliated groups, corporate groups, and more. We partnered with COTS through Alley Taco and donated 10% of Wednesday sales back to the non-profit. You can find out more information on volunteering at COTS: HERE.
DETROIT DOG RESCUE
A perfect volunteer opportunity for any animal lover, “Detroit Dog Rescue is focused on raising awareness for the plight of the forgotten, homeless and stray dogs of Detroit.” There are many ways to get involved in this organization including adoption, fostering, and volunteering at their facilities. Right now, Detroit Dog Rescue has openings for kennel attendants. To learn more about this organization and apply for a volunteer position, you can click HERE.
Wishing warm and safe holidays to everyone in Detroit. Especially to those who need it most!
