The Best Places to get your Donut on for National Donut Day
Tomorrow is National Donut Day and while plenty of us celebrate all that is “the donut” many times a year, TODAY is the day you NEED to get out and get your hands on some sweet fried dough! So we’ve compiled some of our favorite spots around town to get your grub on.
Located on Woodward just south of 7 Mile, Dutch Girl Donuts has been around for over 70 years. If you don’t know where it is hit up your grandparents, they’ll know! They are still made the same way they always have been, with no frills. Grab a glazed donut and kick it old school 24/7.
Tucked behind the Detroit Opera House on John R. Dillas is a tribute from a loving uncle to legendary hip hop producer, J Dilla. They have traditional, organic, vegan and next level donuts to choose from. They are so good you can find them at a few local coffee shops around town. Be sure to get there early they are one of the few that aren’t open day and night.
Located in Dearborn on Ford Rd at Telegraph, Donutville is the perfect pit stop before or after picking up or dropping someone off to the airport. They have a killer blueberry cake donut and when it’s in season the the pumpkin donut is to die for! Swing thru anytime of day cause this classic beaut is open 24/7!
If you’re in Southwest go down Vernor a couple blocks east of Livernois and check this place out. The hot commodity? “Poonchkie” which is spelled just as such as a nod to the Polish staple “paczki” but made slightly different than the traditional way, hence the difference in spelling. Grab a cup of joe and chill out because the staff is super nice!
Serving two suburban locations (9 Mile in Warren and Woodward in Royal Oak) with another on the way in Sterling Heights, you know this place is loved. Family owned and operated, this gem has been around over thirty years and is still growing. They have a wide selection of donuts with some amaaazing weekly specialties!
Cruising down Conant Street in Hamtramck there are tons of great spots to eat; Aladdin Sweets and Cafe, Buddy’s Pizza, California Burgerz and The Family Donut Shop. They make traditional Polish fare, so grab a few paczki but DO get at least one piece of Burek. Anthony Bourdain is even hip to this place so you know it’s GREAT!
On 8 Mile just east of Meijer at Woodward is the newest star to the Detroit donut scene. Holy Moly has amassed a unified collective of donut lovers in seemingly no time at all. They have over 30 toppings to customize your donuts ranging from your standard chocolate or strawberry dipped, to covered in Oreos, pretzels and even gummy worms! This place is a no judgement zone. Their friendly staff will make you whatever you can dream up in your munchies state! Open 24/7 and offering DELIVERY through ubereats.
HAPPY NATIONAL DONUT DAY LOVERS!
