Something Elegant : Karaoke Therapy
Hello to the fine fine readers of j’adore Detroit!
Your girl - Sara Aldridge here - pumped to share some local spots and events with you this summer.
Up first, K A R A O K E!
Born in Japan in the 70’s, karaoke has seen a continuous evolution throughout the past four decades. It transcends race, gender, color, creed, and occupation. In other words - everyone is doing it! And it has become more than just a pop culture phenomena. Karaoke is a celebration of the amateur instead of the auteur. It is a safe space for people (maybe with the help of a few cocktails) to unveil themselves under the glimmering lights and find a sense of release, a chance for three or four minutes to morph into an alter-ego, to step outside of themselves, forget about the stack of unpaid bills, disconnect from work drama, and find a sense of freedom and peace. It is a place for bonding experiences and blatant shenanigans.
It is therapy...
Karaoke in its own right is a form of magic. Just as the shaman uses a wand, karaoke singers get to invoke their own magic through the microphone - it’s the medium in which we can transmit our own magical power.
Karaoke provides a way of purifying one’s soul through the voice. Karaoke is a way to exorcise one’s demon’s, it is a sort of religion.
